Tax Slabs, Income Rules & Compliance — 2026
Updated 4 October 2026. A practical reference for the major Income-tax, GST and business-compliance rules relevant to individuals, professionals and businesses. This is a summary—not a substitute for the applicable Act, Rules, notification or taxpayer-specific advice.
New Tax Regime — Slabs
Resident individuals can get Section 87A rebate up to ₹60,000 where taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh, subject to the applicable conditions. Health & Education Cess is 4% on tax plus surcharge.
Old Tax Regime — Slabs
For senior citizens, the basic exemption threshold differs. The old regime allows more deductions/exemptions than the default new regime. Section 87A rebate is up to ₹12,500 where taxable income does not exceed ₹5 lakh, subject to conditions.
Standard Deduction & Common Deductions
- New regime: standard deduction of ₹75,000 for eligible salary/pension income.
- Old regime: standard deduction of ₹50,000 for eligible salary/pension income.
- Common old-regime deductions may include Sections 80C, 80D, 80TTA/80TTB and other eligible provisions, subject to conditions.
- New-regime deductions are restricted compared with the old regime; do not assume every old-regime deduction is available.
Core Income-tax Rules
- Report salary, business/professional income, interest, rent, capital gains and other taxable income as applicable.
- Match reported income with AIS/TIS, Form 26AS, Form 16/16A and bank/investment records.
- Advance-tax instalments generally fall on 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March when advance-tax provisions apply.
- Late filing, interest, fee, TDS/TCS mismatch and tax demand rules can apply depending on the case.
GST Rate & Filing Rules
- GST classification is product/service specific; the current structure includes Nil/exempt, 5%, 18% and a 40% special rate for specified supplies, with other special-rate entries where notified.
- For many monthly filers, GSTR-1 is generally due on the 11th and GSTR-3B on the 20th of the following month, subject to applicable rules.
- Eligible QRMP taxpayers can file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly; Maharashtra falls in the group generally having quarterly GSTR-3B due on the 22nd.
- Input Tax Credit requires valid documents and compliance with applicable conditions and matching/reconciliation requirements.
Registration & Composition Basics
- GST registration thresholds and compulsory-registration rules depend on the nature of supply, State/UT, inter-State/e-commerce activities and other statutory conditions.
- QRMP is generally available to eligible taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore, subject to the scheme conditions and filing history.
- Composition levy has separate eligibility, rate, invoice, ITC and compliance restrictions; composition taxpayers generally cannot collect tax in the normal manner.
- Do not choose a GST scheme only on turnover—check supply type and statutory eligibility first.
Withholding & Statement Rules
- TDS/TCS applicability depends on the payment/transaction, payer/payee status, thresholds and the relevant section or provision.
- Deposit tax within the applicable statutory time, file the correct quarterly statement and reconcile with Form 26AS/AIS.
- Common quarterly TDS statement due dates are 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May, subject to the statement and applicable rules.
- Issue TDS certificates and maintain PAN, challan, deduction and transaction records as required.
MSME Classification Rules
These revised MSME classification limits apply from 1 April 2025. Udyam registration is free on the official portal and does not require annual renewal.
Official Udyam Portal →Food Business Thresholds
FSSAI revised the turnover thresholds effective 1 April 2026. Activity-specific eligibility and other criteria can still matter, so verify the business category before applying.
Official FSSAI 2026 Order →EPF & Professional Tax References
- EPF applicability, contribution and wage-ceiling rules depend on the establishment, employee status and the EPF law/notifications applicable to the case.
- Professional Tax in Maharashtra is governed by the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act and its current rate schedule.
- For employees, verify the latest state PT schedule and EPFO instructions before calculating deductions or deposits.
